Prep Is Key

When it comes to professional sod installation, the most important steps are the ones you take before you even begin laying sod. Our advice is to ensure that the ground you’re installing sod on is flat and level. Of course, no ground is ever going to be perfectly level, but the closer you can get it, the better off you’ll be. It may seem like a lot of work, but trust us when we say that if you dedicate your time at the beginning to ensuring that your yard is level, the end result will make you the envy of every neighbor on your block.

Add Topsoil

Next, add a layer of topsoil to the ground. This will help to  ensure that your sod has something to grip onto as it starts to grow. We recommend using a professional topsoil, as it will be free of any debris or rocks that could potentially damage your new sod. Once you’ve added a layer of topsoil, use a garden rake to evenly distribute it across the ground. Is topsoil really necessary? It is, because putting topsoil beneath your new sod can provide it with the essential nutrients it needs to get off to a good start. After that, it’s time to lay your sod!

Laying Sod

Now that your yard is prepped and ready, it’s time to lay the sod! We recommend working in small sections, no more than 4-feet wide, so that you can ensure that the sod is properly fitted and secured. Start by unrolling the sod and placing it in the desired location. Use a sharp knife or scissors to cut the sod if needed, then use your hands or a push broom to firmly press it into the ground. Make sure that all of the seams line up nicely, then repeat the process until the entire section is covered.

Water and Maintain

Once your sod is installed, be sure to water it daily for at least a couple of weeks. When your sod is first starting out, the more water you give it, the better. After two weeks, you can taper watering back to help your grass become mature — but make certain that if your sod starts turning a gray color, you give it more water as quickly as possible.

At the end of the day, the right prep work allows you to install sod like a pro. Although it’s possible to do it yourself, if you’re looking for a team that you can trust to do the job right, turn to the residential sod installation experts at Easy Green Landscaping for quality results every time.
